A fandom AU is a fandom character played from a popular or common fan-created AU (a canon adult character played as a high schooler, for example, or perhaps a darker version of Luke Skywalker?) as opposed to something like a CRAU where the character's non-canon development comes from storylines you, yourself, have written.
